“ Visiting from LA, and decided to visit this restaurant.Food was delicious and tasted authentic. Would definitely recommend if you're craving some Guatemalan food. ”
“ Not a single word of English is spoken here. The menu is on a whiteboard in Spanish. I think the only word in English here was 'Restroom'. In a bright, huge space on the busy block of Mission between 18th and 19th Streets is this old-fashioned cafeteria. However, instead of choices like meatloaf and mashed potatoes, they serve homestyle Guatemalan cooking by the ladleful. For the first time since I traveled to Japan, I had to pull out the camera feature of the Google Translate app and scan the descriptions taped to the sneeze guard just to figure out what each dish was. I had read the Beef Ribs were good, but they were out. I quickly pointed to the Grilled Pork Ribs, and they prepared a plate with rice, black beans, and creamy cucumber slices (photo: https://yelp.to/a1uMsPwfWN). It came with four thick, grilled and piping hot flour tortillas wrapped in foil (photo: https://yelp.to/4tVhzoDbTz). It was $14 (cash only), and while the ribs were a bit on the chewy side, it was quite a deal for such a hearty meal. I was clearly the only non-Latino in the restaurant, and while I ate, I noticed almost everybody else was eating big bowls of soup. I came back a couple of weeks later with soup on the brain. This time I confidently pointed to the Caldo de Pata des Res and even mumbled it out loud. It translates to "Beef Leg Broth", but it was more like a spicier menudo with tripe and three cow hooves with the skin left on (photo: https://yelp.to/9osDP75XBm). I'm big on menudo so I liked it a lot. It came with rice and the same piping hot tortillas. I even had a can of coconut juice with coconut pulp. Again just $14. That was the evening I became a true Guatemalan. FOOD - 4 stars...everything was $14 no matter what you order but get the delish caldo with the cow's feet AMBIANCE - 4 stars...huge, spacious, and clean SERVICE - 4 stars...just assume you're the foreigner in their country, and you'll be fine TOTAL - 4 stars...a hearty homestyle Guatemalan meal at a good price...se habla espanol? “ Welcome Hermelinda! This new Guatemalan restaurant on Mission has a spacious and airy interior, a super clean and open kitchen, and a scrumptious buffet of all the Guatemalan favorites -- Pepián, caldos, envueltos, pollo asado y dorado, aguas frescas, atol of many flavors, and much more! The plates come with rice, beans, hand-made tortillas (yum!), and macaroni salad. The flavors are spot on, and we have been to the town in Guatemala that inspires the food at this restaurant. The owner was very cordial and is offering a grand opening deal which is too good to beat! Wishing them lots of success -- it is a fantastic new addition, and we can't wait to visit again soon!
